Do you get like pension or something?

Yes, we get both of professional pension from our teaching career and

Next year I’ll get my state pension

And Mike gets state pension and teacher’s pension

Only people that had been recognized profession for a long time

I mean if people are I don’t know manual workers or that sort of thing They wouldn’t get that amount

I’ve seen news, tv shows in Japan and

People are getting like Let’s say five hundred pounds or like six hundred pounds a month

And their rent is almost the same amount so

People are really struggling to sustain their life there but

That’s a lot of money and I was shocked

Do you see people working there even after the retirement age in the UK?

I think what people do is they go back to work They take other jobs in order to supplement their income

Because they don’t have enough money

Supermarket workers, drivers

Like seventy years old, seventy five?

Yeah I think people who didn’t get such a reasonable pension as us

I think it’s worth saying as well

I could see this coming

And so I paid in extra into my pension

So that I got more money at the end of it

I’ve paid in a huge amount of money every month to supplement my pension

What is important for people to make

What advice would you give to me? I’m thirty two years old

We’ve never extravagant

I mean we’ve always enjoyed our holidays and

We’ve never been extravagant We’ve bought what we needed but

We’ve never gone overboard and spent more than we needed

We have always saved

We live frugally

We don’t but new cars every year

And you thought ahead and paid extra money into your pension

Nowadays people wanna show off because of social media and stuff and

They wanna spend a huge amount of money on Louis Vuitton and stuff like that

But you don’t need that actually and see

We’ve never done that sort of stuff

I used to work in the US and came back to India

Yes, we do

I need to ask you

Nowadays in my country Japan People struggle to sustain their life

After their retirement just with their pension because they get like

It depends on the person obviously

But they get like seven hundred AUD or eight hundred AUD but

If you don’t have a house The rent is already like six hundred dollars seven hundred dollars

How can I sustain your life like that?

I don’t know how people can go with a hundred dollars per month

For all the expenditure and you know

At the age of after sixty or seventy when they retire

They have all the health problems see most of the people they have to

Of course the government can cover all those things I think, right?

But in India also we have something like that

Government will take care of our health for government employees

And even for the public sector we get some pension and other things

So we are not that bad in India

People can live with that money

I know the currency is different but

I’m a businessman actually and

I worked in a company only for two years

I don’t need any government assistant or anything like that

I have my own earnings and I have my own savings so with that I manage

But do you see people in India

Even after their retirement age like sixty, sixty five people are still working there?

Yes, some people

So you can confidently say that you don’t need to work anymore?

No I don’t want to work

You don’t wanna work

I don’t want to make money also because

I’m happy now

I can go wherever I like

I can go to see my other son in the US

I want to go to Japan actually That’s my wish

My last question is gonna be like this then

I’m at working age I’m still thirty two

And I wanna be like you

I don’t wanna be working after retirement age which is like sixty, sixty five

What advice would you give to me?

What should I live now?

You have to save some money for you and for your family

And make them happy

Then you’ll be happy

I don’t have to think to make myself happy first

But to make my family happy

If your family is happy, you are happy naturally

Like right now, my sons, they are happy they are happily settled

I need not to make any money or anything like that

I can take care of myself We are happy

That’s the basic point

I’m fifty nine

And you retired?

We retired early

Yeah, I retired at fifty four

At what age do people usually retire in Canada?

Usually around sixty, sixty five

And I need to ask you

What made it possible for you guys to retire early? Earlier than usual?

Honestly, no kids

Okay, yeah kids are expensive

Kids are expensive plus we started saving quite early in our work life

You didn’t wasted money for like expensive cloths and stuff like that

Our priority was travel

Experiencing life for today rather than the future

We do anticipate staying home in our later years

And traveling while we can physically do it now

So in Canada do people get pension after retirement?

So again number of different things

We get pension from our workforce

That we pay into and the employer also pays into

And then we get a government pension which can start as early as sixty

But it gets discounted coz you are taking it early

Sixty five is the norm to start your Canadian pension

Some people work till seventy so then they get more of pension from the government

Coz they aren’t taking that early

And then they also have Old Age Supplement as well for those that don’t have enough money

Nowadays in my country Japan people are struggling

To sustain their life after retirement just with their pension because

We say people live untill a hundred years old nowadays

And also in my country there are really few younger generation but a lot of elderly people so

They get less pension nowadays unfortunately

I need to ask you How much do you guys get paid per month?

It’s going to depend on

I’m younger so my pension won’t start until later

Jerry started earlier

So it’s gonna vary over next several years

And then we also own our home so

So that’s really going to fund our retirement

Our condominium is our future investment

And our plan is to when we dix

Our last paycheck is paying for out funeral

But do you know how much approximately you get per month?

Right now it’s different I think it’s about five thousand a month

I know that things are expensive in Canada but five thousand, that sounds quite good

And you can live pretty comfortably, can’t you?

We don’t have to worry about expenses

You don’t have to work anymore?

No but

Are many people like this?

Huge variance between people

There’s very rich There’s very poor that live on the street as well

There’s many people that say they are going to enjoy things they want to when they are finished working

And some people work till sixty five or seventy then

They are shocked to find out their health is no longer good

So they can’t enjoy what they had hoped for

Or not of the spouse members maybe has passed or something like that

We’ve both experienced a lot of lost in our life

With extended family

We just know that we have to live for today

Coz tomorrow may not be here

So we have to spend less in the future we will

And we can downsize our current property if we need to as well

You retired quite early and many people wanna be like you guys

You don’t wanna work until like seventy or eighty years old

I need your advice

If I wanna be like you if younger people wanna be like you

What is important?

I think you need to start saving as early as you can if you are working

It’s always hard you get your paycheck you wanna spend the whole thing

Either put it into real estate or

Save it and invest in the market for long term It’s going to work for you

Ask yourself when you are spending money

Do you really need what you are spending your money on?

Can you start putting away little bits?

That seems very small but at the end of one year It has grown

I was a gerontologist

So in America you get social security?

You get social security and

You can take it anytime between sixty two and seventy

The longer you wait, the more you get

So what’s the retirement age usually in the US?

Depends people retire at usually sixty five

Form the social security nowadays?

I get paid thirteen hundred a month

Is that enough for you to sustain your life?

On no! Not at all

So do you work as a casual or what do you have to do?

No, I’m married and my husband has pension Then we’ve saved our life

Yes

Especially with inflation they are struggling to buy

Medications, their food

Hitting homes It’s getting harder and harder

What do you think is the most important thing for me to do I’m thirty two years old

For me to do to have enough asset or money

To sustain my life after retirement?

You have to pay yourself first

So when you work you get a paycheck ten percent should go to you first

Before anything else

Because it’s called compounded interest, right

The more you put away early

It grows, earns interest

And that’s what every young person has to do

Do you have Starbacks in Japan, right?

Don’t go to Starbacks and save that three dollars and put it away

Start small

Even if it’s a little bit Just keep putting it away

That’s gonna be big in the future

That’s the only way you gotta do

Unless you are smart enough to be an entrepreneur you company makes millions

But both of us aren’t so you have to start saving
