Thank you very much for your help

What country are you guys from?

We’re from the Philippines

Yes, the Philippines

And are you here in Australia for..?

Just holiday

Having some vacation

How long are you going to stay here?

I’ll say at least a week

So, we’re leaving on Sunday

Just until Sunday

So, this is the thing when Japanese people take a holiday break, it’s pretty hard to take, like two weeks off, three weeks off

Whereas Australian people take, like, two weeks off, three weeks off

I wish I could do the same

How about you guys? Is it difficult to get like, a month off?

Yeah, kinda

Especially in out industries we’re always on the go in terms of work

We’re always being… people are looking for us all the time it’s really hard to take a long break from work

So is it like, technically you can, but you feel awkward to ask

Somehow, yes

In out industry, we’re both in sales

So we have to talk to people A lot of clients

Even if we’re on a holiday break and now people are calling us, looking for us

I see

The priority is to keep them happy

Okay, so today I’m here in Bondi Beach

Making a video about bad manners or breach of manners

I’m from Japan

I believe it’s a country that has lots of unique cultures and manners we have, specific behaviors that we do

Which I think it can be a bit rude sometimes in other countries

So, I want you to listen to them and I want you to tell me

How it is like in your country, if it’s okay or not

Okay

Have you ever been to Japan, though?

Yeah, we have been there

How many times?

Maybe four or five

What?

Yes, we have been there five times We love Japan

We love Japan

More than I have More than I have, guys

Okay, interesting

So, okay, let’s have a look at the first one

In restaurants, getting staff’s attention by saying “excuse me”

In the Philippines yes, we can do that

They have their name plates Sometimes they actually have their name plate

So we can just call them by their name

Is it like “Hey, Jack”?

Yeah

Especially, some restaurants are quite crowded

So you really need to get their attention

Okay, Interesting You need to call their name

How about lifting your plate or bowl when you’re eating

You know, in a Western country you need to eat like this

But in an Asian country lift up the plate and then eat like this

Yeah, it’s fine because we’re from the Philippines so we can actually lift our bowls and plates

Yeah, but actually, for me, it’s quite subjective

In the place you’re in or the restaurant you’re in

Because sometimes it’s in a formal setting..

Or if you are in a fine dining setting

Okay so, it sounds like you can do it

But it’s not the best idea

Yeah

Okay Interesting

Instead of blowing nose, Japanese people tend to sniff

So, in Japan, blowing nose in front if people, it’s a bit rude

Oh, ok It is same with us

So, we keep doing

Yeah

We hold it in until we are in a place where it’s quite private

Do you take your shoes off when you go inside a house?

Yeah, most of the time it’s also a Filipino thing

Oh, it’s also a Philipino thing

Knocking on a toilet door to make sure that no one is inside

Do you do that?

Sometimes

If the door is locked, there’s really no need to knock

Yeah, it’s quite obvious if someone’s inside

But if we’re really not sure, maybe we can knock

There’s an indication outside of the common toilets There’s a vacant sign

If it’s half open, there’s no one in there so you can just go in

If it’s closed, sometimes you knock

Because in Japan we knock the door to make sure there’s no one inside

Even if it is unlocked?

Maybe, maybe not

But apparently it could be a bit of rushing the people inside like, hurry up, sort of thing

So, it could be rude in some countries

Telling someone their face is so small as a compliment

So especially Japanese girls they do that even in a Western country too

When they come to other countries and they make friends

And they say, “Oh my God, you’re so beautiful, your face is so small”

Well, we actually do the same thing to Filipinas or maybe some people that we meet

I don’t think it’s rude

Yeah, I don’t think it’s rude

Some girls actually appreciate it

Because it sounds like you have a good shape

Most of the time it’s a compliment to really tell

“Oh, you really have a lean face, structure”

Okay interesting

Yeah, it’s really not rude

Okay, so it can happen in the Philippines as well

So last question

Do you have any unique manners in the Philippines

That exist in your country but does not exist in other countries or something like that?

Sometimes when we meet, elderly people, especially relatives

We have this gesture to show respect It’s called mano

so, we do like, for example, he’s my grandfather

So I’ll say “mano po” To show respect

So can, you not shake hands or be “Hi, grandpa”?

You can do that

But for relatives or your elders or your close elder people that’s more respectful to do

Like this?

It’s a show of respect to the elderly

So that’s something very Filipino that we do

Yeah , we do something like that, but it’s very different

Oh, interesting Thank you, guys

Thank you very much

What country are you from?

Pakistan

I love your hair colour What’s happening?

I dyed it for a dance performance

It’s been like a month I like it, so I decided to keep it

Wait, your sound like an Aussie

I’ve lived here my whole life

Oh, okay You’re born and raised here

So I’ve lived my whole life here I moved here when my parents came here I was one year old So I’ve lived my whole life here

But when I was 18, I went back by myself for one year

For what reason?

So, I finished my studies and I though it would be a good idea to connect with my culture a little bit

And I feel in love with it

I have my friends there now

I traveled a bit, so now every year I try and go back for a few months

Oh, that’s beautiful

I’m a content creator who interviews, people in the world to see cultural contrast and different people’s

Different opinions and all that

Today here in Bondi Beach

Asking non-Japanese people about bad manners actually a breach of manners

It sounds funny, but I’m from Japan

Where it is very unique and original

And I believe we have a different perspective to manner and behaviors

So, I want you, as an Australian and Pakistan person

To listen to them and tell me if I can say the same thing in your country or not

Okay Have you been to Japan, though?

No, I haven’t , but it’s beautiful and I will go one day

Next destination

All right, let’s go Starting from the first one

So, in Japan, in the restaurant

To get staff’s attention, we say, “Excuse me”

We need to kind og scream “Excuse me”

Can you do that?

Here no In Pakistan, maybe

So here in Australia? No, you can’t Is it rude?

Yeah, I feel like here it’s more of a smile get theie eyes and then do like

What about lifting your plate or bowl when you’re eating?

We Japanese hold a rice bowl and eat like that

Can you?

I don’t think it’s considered rude I’ve done it before I don’t think it’s rude

But I think most people do just eat with it

Yeah, but I feel like with your food

It’s more like rice and noodles, right?

So, it makes sense to pick up the bowl

Like, if you were eating like a steak

You’re not going to pick up

Do you know what I mean?

Instead of blowing our nose, we tend to sniff

So, blowing our nose in front of people is considered as a rude thing

So we just keep doing this

I do that as well But I don’t think it’s rude to sniff here

Have you seen some people? They really

I don’t think it’s rude to do that

It also, depends

How about this?

When you get on the taxi, where do you sit?

In the back

In the back? Okay

I think most of Japanese people sit in the back

But according to an article, it says it’s quite posh

Is it?

Yeah I don’t know I feel like especially after C***D most people want their space

So even if you try and sit an the front, they will put you in tha back

So, I think before it was like a posh thing

But now it’s more of a you have germs So got to the back

It was actually a posh thing before

Oh , interesting

We learned in an English class

When someone sneeze, you got to say bless you

If you don’t say that, if you just ignore is it rude?

Yeah If someone didn’t say bless me, I would look at them a little bit

Why didn’t you bless me?

People forget all the time A lot of people don’t do it

But I think it’s rude if you hear it and you don’t

Okay, I actually don’t, but I learnt it Now I need to

If I sneeze, you better say bless you I’ll be testing you

Be careful Yeah You need to say blessed

Otherwise it’s rude

Mostly Japanese girls tend to say

“Oh, my God, your face is so small” as a compliment

Like, I believe that if you get along with the Japanese girl

And then when she sees you sometimes, she might say

“Oh my God, you face is so small”

Because it’s considered as good shape, good thing

But how dose it sound?

I can understand the intention of it being good

But I think I would interpret it to be a bit backhanded

Obviously, like with cultures, it’s the same with Pakistan

If you’re thin, you’re pretty, you’re fair you’re obviously beautiful

But I think it might be a little ride to comment on a figure anyway

That’s true

So, you better not talk about someone’s figure anyway

Okay, we learned that

Okay, so last question

So you’re from Australia and Pakistan

You can talk about both or you can talk about one of them

But do you have any unique manner in your country?

Well, in Pakistan, it’s rude to look your elders in the eye

Really?

Growing up, if I would just not look at my parents

When I talk to them, or I would lower my eyes a little bit

What?

So there’s that But I know in Australia

If you’re not making eye contact, that’s rude

So, there’s the difference

I found that in Japan, we are in the middle

So we shouldn’t be looking at a person’s eye all the time

But I found that Australian people do you guys need to do the eye contact to be like a proper

But in your country, you can’t

Older than you or if they’re more senior than you

Then it’s rude to look them in the eye

What a story

What a story you have

Than you very much

I appreciate please enjoy your day

Thank you so much

3組目 スリランカ出身の男性に聞いてみた!

What country are you from?

I’m from Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka?

I’ve been doing this job for about three years now

And this is going to be the first time to interview people from Sri Lanka

Nice to see you, mate

Nice to meet you, too

And what have you been doing in Australia? Are you here for a holiday or?

Yeah, I came here for a vacation so I’m staying with my uncle and auntie

And today I came here to Bondi Beach

So, I’m roaming around and it’s really nice culture and a good vibe

Good vibe

Does everyone speak English in your country?

Yeah, English is my third language, I think

Wait How many languages do you have?

We have three languages

First is Sinhala and the second is Tamil

And third is English

Okay

Everyone can speak like that Like many languages

Yeah

This is special we only speak Japanese usually

Okay I’m a content creator

For interview people in the world about different cultures and different opinions from people in the world

And today, here in Bondi Beach

I’ve been asking people about manners Bad manners

I’m from Japan, where it is very unique and different from many places

And I believe that we have very original cultures and manners to follow

So, I have more than a couple of them and I want you to listen to them first

And tell me if you can say the same thing in your country or it’s different

Because some manners can be a bit rude in other countries, I believe

Okay, let’s start from the first one

In restaurants

When you get attention from staff

You need to say, “Excuse me!” “Excuse me”

You can’t just give an eye contact like Australia

We normally do say “excuse me”

In our country also same

So, can you scream “Excuse me”?

Yeah

Excuse me, come here to serve us, or something else

Okay

How about lifting your plate or bowl when you’re eating?

Not really

No, we normally eat at the table itself

Okay

Instead of blowing nose, we tend to sniff

In front of people, it’s a bit rude in Japan

So, we keep doing this

Is it okay?

Yeah for good manners Yes, that’s true it’s like that

Sitting in a backseat of taxi

So, no one really sits on the passenger seat when you take a taxi in Japan

How is it like in your country?

Most of the I think the mature people always wanted to talk to the driver

Then they will sit next to the driver

They want to talk to the driver?

Yeah, sometimes It’s really cool, right?

It’s fun for him and also time is passing, right?

Rarely people sit back seat, since they are coming as a couple or coming with their family or anything Then they will sit behind

Sounds like you guys are really friendly people

Because in Japan, no one really wants to talk to strangers

So, we just sit on the back and don’t really talk

Do you take your shoes off when you go inside a house?

Yes

You do?

We do We have the culture in Sri Lanka

And also, our religion as well

I believe many Japanese people thing that’s only Japan, to take shoes off when you go inside

But actually in many countries people do

Telling someone, “Oh my God, your face is so small” as a compliment

Have you ever heard of it?

No

The last question

Do you have any unique cultures unique manners in your country?

So when it comes to food and meal we usually eat with our fingers

not with a fork and spoon

Both hands?

Not both hands, only the right hand

So how about the left-handed, southpaw person?

No, not using the left hand

It’s a culture you need to follow

Right hand only

Only the right hand

So, this is what you need to follow in Sri Lanka

Okay Interesting

Thank you very much

Thanks a lot

Thank you very much

4組目 フランス出身の2人組に聞いてみた!

What country are you guys from?

France

Yes, France, right

Holding coffee and having a good day, today?

Oh, yeah Ice Mochan and a hangover day

Perfect day in Bondi

Had a bit of too much fun yesterday

Yeah, definitely

We are lucky though Even with a hangover

You hold a nice coffee and came to Bondi Beach

Beautiful day

How long have you stayed in Australia already?

One year

Same one year

So, I’m content creator from Japan

And today here in Bondi Beach

I’ve been asking people about a breach of manners, original manners

I’m from Japan and I believe that Japan is very unique original and we have different manners and behaviors

From the other countries

So first

I want you guys to listen to them and please tell me how you think about them

If I can do that in your country or maybe not

And I will ask you about your cultures your manners as well

Have you guys been to Japan before, by the way?

No, never

Not yet But I would like to

I wish I would, the same

Beautiful country

Thank you very much

So, the first one is in Japan in the restaurant

To get the staff’s attention, we say

“Excuse me”, can you do this in your country?

Yes, we can

Because I thought in a western country you just need to give an eye contact

Yeah If you have a good waiter

But sometimes you need to ask

Put your hands up

Some people are not hard worker you need to scream

Yeah, you need to pull them directly

And I’m not patient Maybe this is why also

But it’s not rude

No, it’s not rude if you say “Excuse me sir”

Okay Be respectful and no problem

Okay How about this?

In Japan, when we eat

We lift up the plate or bowl and we eat like this

Can you?

No In France, more for the chile

More of the chile A child will do that?

Or if you are eating in your couch and be like that

Otherwise, at the restaurant or at home you leave your plate on the table

So, it sounds like a really bad yeah If you did that in a restaurant?

Yeah No I can’t imagine in a restaurant

Be careful guys

Instead of blowing nose, we tend to sniff

So that means blowing nose in front of people It’s pretty rude in Japan

So, we tend to be like we just hold it

I think it depends

You can blow your nose quickly

If it’s like a very big thing you can go into toilet

If you have a flu or something

But if you do this France, not good

It is not pleasant to hear

Usually

Do you guys take shoes off when you go inside the house?

Not every time

Not every time?

No, not every time It depends

Sometimes, yes, but not every time

For example, you can do like, house party and not remove your shoes

It’s completely okay but just depends Really depends

It really depends on the people who owns the place

Some people are really strict about that and other doesn’t care

They live with the shoes inside It depends on people

Maybe like Australia

Some family take the shoes off but some house, no problem

How about this?

In the English class, we learned

When someone sneeze, we need to say Bless you

Do you do that? Or if I don’t say anything, is it rude?

Can be

Can be But yes, usually naturally we do something like “a tes souhaits”

Usually we say it

And I think some people can think it’s rude when you don’t say it

Okay, So, you better say Bless you

Okay interesting

Because Japanese we just ignore

Really?

Or maybe you ask, do you have a hay fever? That’s it

Especially girls do this telling someone

Okay, so if I were your friend and I saw you

“Oh my God, your face is so small”, as a compliment

I never heard of this

Maybe better not to do that

Because many Japanese girls do it even when they come to Australia

Especially because Western people have a really nice shape I mean, nice body balance shape

If you have a big face, it doesn’t look good

So that’s why when we see Western girls

“Wow, she was a small face Tiny face”

If Japanese girl or friend comes to you, and say,

“Oh my God, you have small face”, and you’ll be like…

What does it mean?

What does it mean by small face?

I think doesn’t make sense for me

okay

So the last question is going to be like this

Do you have any France manners which doesn’t exist on other countries?

Yes, maybe So we, call it “La bise”

Usually when you see, your friend, family even some colleagues

I come and just do this

This is so friendly

For you, maybe it’s really..

Awkward

Yes, that’s it

I’ve been in Australia already for eight years

And sometimes when I see not only French people

But maybe Latino people, maybe one time, I don’t know

But we do something like that Yeah Hello

A kiss

Sometimes it’s even four, sometimes three

Depending where you’re from in France

It’s two or three or four

Oh fall in love

A lot of kisses

It’s still like 8:00 a.m. in the morning

Exactly

But you have to do that? To be like polite?

If you didn’t do it, there is like a distance

Okay You feel like you have distance

Yeah ecaxtly

It’s a common way to say hello

And sometimes it’s really annoying

Because you don’t want to be that close with people

But it’s common to say hello like

Is that only in between men and women?

Oh That’s a good point

Even like, if you’re good friends with me or some guys, yes we can do it

Usually, it is more woman

We have to do the “la bise” to guys and girls

Because sometimes guys will just shake hands

Because it’s guys as you are doing

But some guys do “La bise” between themselves

Sometimes it’s a bit awkward when I see

Let’s say, French people And I’m always like

Thank you very much

Merci beaucoup
