I think it is pretty difficult to find

what we really what to do in our life

Apparently like Japanese twenties Only 40% of Japanese twenties know

what they wanna do in their lives

Let me ask you some questions about that

So you said you are a student in Australia

I bet you go to university, Right?

And simply, do you have anything that you wanna do in your life?

So I can’t say in a particular way that I will do this in my life

But I know what I have to do in a few coming years

So that might be the mine

So the first things, priority is completing my degree right now

So that’s a part of my upcoming life

So it’s more like a you have to do

I have to do

so I have to complete my university degree

I have to get a job in my field

And then if I keep on doing that

I may be able to go somewhere in life

But right not I don’t have any particular answer that I’m gonna do this in my life

I wanna get success

I wanna get money So yeah

Like generally speaking, you wanna be you wanna have a nice life in the future

Yeah I wanna have a nice future

What’s your field?

So it’s IT It’s networking field

So my another question is gonna be like this

So working in IT field

Is it the job that you wanted to have since you were a kid?

Or at some point of your life?

Or like you kind of like follow the flow and then you got that?

Yeah I’m just following the flow right now

Yeah yeah just go with the flow

So it’s not like you really really wanted to do in your life

Yeah, like when you invest like I have investment past 3 years in this degree

So it forced me to go in that field

That’s true You don’t wanna waste it

I don’ wanna waste my three years

I wanna get something out of it

So yeah I’ll do that

And in that course, if I find something interesting

If I wanna do something else in my life

I’ll go with that

I agree with you

You sacrifice so much time for assignments

Yeah

Hell of assignments in this country

A lot of nights

Okay, so the last question is gonna be like this

Like I said, I think it is pretty difficult for people

To find out wat they really want to do in their life Right?

And I don’t think it is only in Japan

But also it happens to people in the whole world

So let’s say your future kid or the best friend

Come and asks you, come and talk to you

They’re struggling with this They don’t know what they wanna do in their lives

What sort of advice would you give them for them to be able to find what they wanna do in their lives?

So what I think personally is my advice

It’s not gonna impact them very much

It’s what they feel

Then I think to come from within them

Like they need to feel like “I need to do this”

So I can be at this point but I imagine, so…

Yeah, I would say this “Do whatever you want”

“Do whatever feel right” What makes you happy Just do that”

Just go with how life takes you on

Like in my example, I wanna own good money

I will go on the same field that I’m studying

I’ll invest my time there

In return, I will get what I want

So it’s the same advice to them

What they are investing their time in must What they feel they wanna do

They need to go with that advice

Just go with what you feel is right for you

So maybe I think I understand it, like..

They should find something that they wanna do first

And try to invest time there

And that effort will take them to somewhere

What do you do for a living?

I’m a photographer and content creator

Today here in Sydney I’ve been interviewing people

how they can or should find what they wanna do in their lives

Because it is pretty hard to find what we wanna do in our lives

So you work as a content creator and cameraman, right?

Yeah

Is that the job you wanted to get since your kid?

Or at some point of your life?

Yeah, I mean , I definitely always wanted to work in fashion

Ever since I was a little kid

When I was younger, I was all about fashion design

But I think I’ve always just been very intrigued in the fashion industry

And the creative industry

And over the last ten years

This is just sort of where it’s curved and found me

But it’s definitely something I’ve always wanted to be doing

How old are you, by the way?

So you did something else as well before you got…

Yes, I did I mean I did fashion designer

Worked in publications, in magazines

I did a lot of graphic design

But this sort of photography, content creation

Sort of been the last five years

So you worked with something that you wanna do whole life, pretty much?

Yeah definitely

What do you think it made it possible?

I mean, I think I was just committed to working in the industry

So I was doing work experience in the fashion industry when I was 15

Really? 15?

Yeah I was traveling to see, I grew up in Canberra

I was traveling to Ssdney most weekends

To volunteer at fashion shows

And work for companies

So I think it’s just about commitment, really

Wow, passion eh? Passion

Passion to something that you love

Okay, so here is the main question of this interview

I don’t think it’s only in Japan but also in the whole world

There are heaps of people who are struggling to find what they wanna do in their lives

Like I’m pretty sure that if I ask some of my friend

“Hey, what do you really want to do in your life?”

They’ll be like “Hmm I’m not too sure…”

Because I think as we get older,

We have more things that we need to take into account

Such as like a family if you wanna get one

Finance, you get to save money for a rainy day

Parents expectations, especially in Asia

You know, the parents really, really very strict sometimes

So yeah, what was the question?

I talk too much sometimes

Ah yeah, the last question is

If your future kid or let’s say your best friend

Come and talk to you about this

What sort of advice would you give them

For them to be able to find what they wanna do in their lives?

I mean, I think it just comes down to what makes you happy

You know, some people, it’s music

Some people, it’s fashion

Some people, you know, jewelry making

It could be anything, but

I think at a base level, that’s what you look at

And then you sort of see how that can work for you in a jobs perspective, you know

May not be a full time job, but even if it’s, you know, one or two days a week

That can make you happy

I think it alleviate some of the stress from doing maybe a job you don’t like doing

Yeah yeah,right

Nothing happens instantly

So I think it’s just taking the small steps regularly to get you to where you want to be

If someone says “Hey on work in a fashion industry” like I said Asian parents

Sometimes it gives you a little bit of a bulls**t you know

“Why don’t you want to work in a finance field or something” You know?

They just worry about your future

But you didn’t listen too much or..?

I mean, I was always, that I had supportive parents

They always said that I really care what I do as long as I do it well

But I think, you know, for them

They saw how passionate I was about it

You know, finding my own work experience at 15 and wanting to go to Sydney

I think showed them like I was driven enough to do it

So if I have that much passion for something, then

That’s something I should get into

And that’s obviously paid off

That’s so true though

Because if someone say, “Hey I wanna be a rock and roll star”

And first of all, first impression is gonna be like

“Um.. you better to think well…”

But then if you were like really committing

That can change the mind of the other people as well

Well, we live in Sydney now

No

I’m working in a high school now in the music department

“Hey, I know what I do in my life”

So let me ask you some questions about it, please

So you work in a school in a music department?

Is that the job that you wanted to do since you were a kid?

Or at some point if your life?

All my life just evolved

So I always knew that I wanted to be a musician

I play piano I followed dance

So I went to Germany to study piano

And it was just never a question for me

Okay so that’s why you are kind of working in that sort of industry now? Is the place?

That’s right

As we get older, I think we have more things

That we need to take into account

For example, like a family If you want to have a family

You got to think about them as well and finance

Which is why we’re living in Australia

We decided to shift here from Germany

Because we thought it was a better life

Okay, here in Australia?

Yeah, to bring ip kids

Oh, to bring up kids? Education and all that

And also like finance

You got to think about saving money as well

And yeah, so many things you need to think

But if you don’t have any of these ties

What do you wanna do in your life now?

Like, do you have any dreams?

I know you’re not 20 years old but…

My dream is to retire at the moment

Oh, really?

Yeah yeah, it is But

When we shifted here, I didn’t have a job or anything

We just decided that we were going to shift

And that was following our dream I guess you’d say

To live in a country like Australia, the nature

So that was a bit scary, but at the same time it’s exciting

Yeah, very much so

Okay, so here is the last question

I know it’s gonna be a difficult, but like I said, there are many people

Well, in Japan, according to research, there are approximately 40% of Japanese twenties

They don’t know how to answer when someone ask “Hey, what do you want to do in your life?”

And they’re like “I’m not sure..”

Let’s say if your grandson asks you,

“Hey, Granddad”

“I don’t know what I wanna do in my life”

What sort of advice would you give him?

For him to be able to find what he wants to do in their life?

Well, at the moment, don’t say to him He doesn’t have to know

But if he was a bit older

I would be saying to follow his heart If he has some passion

If he doesn’t, he just has to start somewhere and start on the road See if he likes it

And maybe after a year or two he changes

Okay, so try as much as you can

And if you don’t like it, that’s fine

Leave it and try something else

And eventually he’ll find it

The most important thing is to be happy

There’s no doubt

You know, sometimes we tend to listen to the other people too much

But you got… the priority is to be happy first

And then you’ll find what you wanna do

I was a salesperson

So I just went for like marketing studies

Then I didn’t like it

So I just became a salesperson

Why did you go to a marketing?

Because it was like not science, not letters, not psychology

And it was open to a lot of works

So I was like maybe I will find what I will wanna do

That’t true

Sounds like a marketing is very helpful for you to find a job

What was the job that you wanted to do since you were a kid?

Not really. When I was a kid, I was like, more like a doctor

Doctor?

But unfortunately, I couldn’t go

So I’m direct to marketing too

But it was not really the field that wanted because…

Yeah, I don’t know It was a main field

So I was like, I can do a lot of jobs with marketing

So I said, Why not?

Okay And do you know now what you want to do in your life?

Not really

That’s why we went to Australia

To explore and maybe find what we want to do in life

Maybe find some click, yeah?

As we get older, we kind lo like have to start thinking about many things like

Okay, family, if you wanna get family

And also like finance, we need to save money for rainy day

Expectations maybe from your parents or

So many things that we need to think

But if you don’t have any of these

If you are in a situation where you don’t have to think of any of these

Like simply, what do you wanna do in your life? Like, what do you wanna be?

I wanna travel the world

Travel the world

Everywhere

Well, we want to travel the world and explore

And see new cultures, the new people how they live

Maybe it’s gonna be good if you can find, like, a job related to it, maybe like a traveling in the world

Okay, so the last question is gonna be like this

I don’t think it’s only in Japan but in the whole world

There are many people who are struggling to find what they wanna do in a life

And you said you are one of them

Maybe I’m the one of them and maybe my friends are one of them

It’s difficult

But let’s say it is important to think how to solve that problem as well

So let’s say if your future kid like your best friend, come and ask you

Or come and talk to you about this

What sort of advice would you give to them for them to be able to solve the trouble?

Um.. I feel like if my kids, like, want to know how you what you wanna do in life

Then experience a lot of things when they’re young

Because sometimes you think like “Oh I wanna do like.. I wanna be a doctor”

But you don’t know what that is really to be a doctor

So you need to, I don’t know, to speak with people

To go like in places, to see how it works and stuff…

So be more like.. curious, and interested in many things and just touch?

And in school, you should have like internship

Like when you are really young to see a lot of things, a lot of works

So you can experience a bit

That’s true

Internship is actually important

Because when I was uni student

I was like “Oh you should take an internship”

And I wes like “F**k that s**t”

You know, I don’t wanna waste time But actually

By doing that you can find if you actually don’t like it

So if you don’t like it, you don’t have to touch the field

Yeah, that’s true

What about you?

Well, I would say that “Don’t think too much”

If you want to do something, do it

If you want to travel Travel

If you want to work early, work early

I think you have to do whatever you want

And not think and don’t judge others

Yeah, that’s true

People kind if tend to criticize others sometimes

But yeah, don’t think too much

Because I think too much too

Sometimes I worry about the future, which hasn’t happened yet

And then stop myself from doing that

But actually, it’s nothing It’s gonna be nothing
