How did you start liking anime and when did you start liking it?

When I was in high school My high school studies Japanese as our like choice language

Because you have to study a language in high school and

Obviously in the Japanese class They put on Howl’s Moving Castle

As like you can just watch this instead of doing a lesson

And I was like oh I love this

And I found Studio Ghibli

And then from Studio Ghibli I found anime

And then from anime I found cosplay

And it’s just all one after the other All from the one high school lesson

You’re stuck in a Japanese subculture cycle

That’s good

Did you study Japanese too?

I did but before I start studying Japanese

I picked up a volume of Beach from my local library and

Do they have manga?

Yeah they have manga sometimes

Mine did too actually

My school library had manga in Australia

And I picker up the first volume of Bleach and I read it

And I felt I want more of this

And I’ve seen over three hundred different series now

Yeah, I absolutely love Japan

My family and I travel a lot

And so my thing is like We need to go to Japan because I absolutely love the food and I love the culture

And I wanna go so bad

But the definition of Otaku is so vague for me

Otaku to me is someone who’s just passionate about anime, manga and Japanese culture

It could also just be someone who’s just really passionate about specific subject

Like video games and stuff like that

So it’s an idle, rhythm game and anime

Anime, mange and Japanese games obviously are

The biggest Japanese subculture right

How and when did you start liking them?

Well I met Zoe and she introduced me to it Maybe when I was fourteen

And we’ve been going to conventions with each other since

I started liking anime when I was eight

It was a kinda silly thing I got into it

I was looking at vampires videos on it

I found an anime called Diabolik Lovers

And from there my love for anime just continues

I have a lot of non Japanese friends who live in Japan

And not everyone but most of them

Start liking Japan because of anime and manga

This is like the biggest reason for non Japanese people to start liking Japan

Are you also interested in Japan?

Have you been there before?

I haven’t but I really like to go

I think that the culture and everything they looks so beautiful and I really like to go

I think anime kind of gives us like Us foreigners

A skewed opinion of Japan

And we see it in this one like

My family has been to Japan a few times and they said

It’s not entirely like all the anime you watch though I was like

I know but it influences as well

You know the Japanese word Otaku

And in English it’s the same Otaku

But the definition of Otaku for me it’s like so vague

I think to me it’s more someone who enjoys Japanese like

A pop culture and literature

Really anything that’s like comes from Japan

But I think especially nowadays If you are talking about it between anime fan

That’s how you distinguish with a weeaboo

Who are the crazy foreigner fans who loves Japan a bit too much

And then Otaku is just normal anime fans

When did you start liking it?

I guess the biggest one was social media

Instagram, Facebook whatever

And there you see the cosplayers from Japan

You started liking it from cosplayers?

Yeah

So yeah from there I was like Where are they from?

So I started like looking into the subcultures and I was like

That’s cool

How about you?

For me I just started watching it coz it was on TV so

I watched it as a kid and then

I watched Attack on Titan coz my friend told me to and then I was just

The big one

And I just kept on watching

You know the word Otaku

In English it’s Otaku right?

For me the definition of Otaku is so vague

Even in Japanese I don’t know what’s Otaku much to be honest

What is the definition of Otaku for you guys?

I wanna know how you understand it in English

For me it’s basically someone who doesn’t go outside

No social life kind of thing

And I just think of it as someone who is very like KInd of over the top with their love for like Japan or anime and

I’m from a game Onmyoji

How about you? What’s the theme?

So it’s an amor set from Monster Hunter

You two are from games yeah?

How much did you spend on it?

On this i’s probably say

Hundred dollars plus

That’s it

So I made this

From scratch but it did cost me quite a fair but

So it’s made from foam but

It adds up surprisingly

So probably in the hundreds

Some hundreds yeah?

Maybe one hundred something coz

It’s like foam layered on foam so

You guys are really good at it

I wanna ask you how and when did you get a know anime and manga?

They do show quite a lot of anime in Australia

And manga is actually quite popular as well

You find a lot pop culture book shops tend to sell them

So you get exposed to it quite often

With social media I suppose nowadays it’s even more

If I’m gonna be honest I didn’t actually know what anime was until I was like in mid twenties

Quite late yeah?

I was in university and that’s when I actually discovered anime, manga and all that And it was just since then yeah

Since then you got into it

A lot of non Japanese people who live in Japan

Obviously they like Japan They are interested in Japan That’s why they live there

Most of them start liking Japan

Because of manga and anime

It’s funny though because my friends and I were talking about going to Japan but
