When you used to live in Japan

Have you ever felt like this

Japanese people really think about what other people think?

I think so. so you know

I grew up here in Australia so for eighteen years I lived over here

And here I feel people are very carefree

So that’s how I grew up

And when I went to Japan I was pretty surprised about that

A lot of people they tend to stay towards themselves

And really care about what other people think about them

And also feel a little bit anxious or anxiety but

One think I noticed is especially in Osaka

Very strong

Very strong heart and very carefree

So you know actually I was pretty surprised about that

I went to Osaka for university

I feel like home

Even on a train or down in outside Seven Eleven. Outside the convenience stores

They started talking to me

Thank you very much for your help guys

Where are you from?

Melbourne Australia

What are you up to today?

Just went for a walk. Got some lunch

We had some fish and chips

Very Australian, hey

So we are filming a video about pressure from people around you and stuff like that

I’m gonna let Rupa sensei ask the first question

Alright so the main topic of today as you said is

Feeling pressure Felling to need to fit in

Would you say that you are a quite confident person and

You don’t care about what other people think of you?

Or you feel a little bit anxiety sometimes?

I feel pretty confident

Sometimes a little anxiety but most of the time confident

I’m the same

Sometimes I feel a bit anxious like

When I’m in new situations

Especially in Japan

We care about what other people think

I don’t really care personally but

For example wearing a mask you know

We’re not wearing a mask now but

I get lots of comments saying “In Australia don’t people wear a mask?” Or something like that

So I’d say most of people in Japan wear a mask

But I believe that some people wear a mask

Not because they don’t wanna get sick

But because they don’t wanna look fool. They don’t wanna be judged by other people

This is just an example

And traveling as well

Some people wanna go traveling but they kinda hesitate

Because if you go now maybe some people will say

“Why do you do that now?” “Why do you have to do that now?”

Have you ever felt something like this about wearing a mask and like traveling and stuff like that?

Or you just do whatever you wanna do as long as it’s legal?

I personally just do what I think is right

I just go with my opinion

I reckon I’m the same

Following my opinion like

I like to follow the rules most of the time

But when it’s not too bad say

We are in compacted environment but it’s outside

Sometimes I’m like maybe I should be wearing a mask but I’m not but

It’s regal so

What do you think generally Australia people?

Australian people tend to thing like that you think?

Yeah

I’d say majority

A lot of them don’t really care about the rule I think

It just depends which crowed of people you are in but

True.

Everyone’s different

Australian people are very carefree

So in Japan I think we care about peer pressure a lot

If majority of people believe in that way

If you were minority, you’d feel like

Maybe I should go this way too

Even if you are not thinking in that way

You kinda feel like you have to

Otherwise you look like a black sheep in Japan

You are different from other people

And you are not gonna be accepted well

What do you think about this personally?

Do you do that? Or If you believe in one thing

You just go for what you believe? Or

Have you ever felt something like this?

I think I’ve always been in quite openminded environment so

I can do what I believe. I can do what I want to myself like

I’ll say that’s the Australia

Well, that’s good

You put yourself out there

And normally it’s like what goes around comes around

If you track that energy then

You get yourself in those opportunities that what you believe in

Thank you very much ladies. Thank you for your help

Where are you from?

I’m from China

Me too I’m from China

You’ve been in Australia for a long time now?

It’s our first day here

First day?

Your first day in Australia You speak English already?

What did you do in China?

I’ve been doing a data analyst for five years and

Then I quit my job and then I

Took a master program here in University of Melbourne

Oh that’s why you learned English there too like. You used English in university

That’s why you can speak English

How about you? What did you do?

In college I learned accounting but

After I graduated

I was a cook in a restaurant

What did you cook?

French cuisine

So diving into the content guys

I think it’ll be interesting to ask you

So we can get an opinion from China, Japan and Australia so

A lot of people especially overseas

They can start to feel very nervous or bit anxious. And feel anxiety of what other people are thinking about them

Would you say you two are the kind of people that. Care a lot about what other people think about you?

Or you are more carefree? You are more of a free person?

Actually I don’t care what people think about me

Really?

In most time I do whatever I want to do

Perfect

So I think this is special time that in the COVID environment

Most of people in China for example Like our friends and our families

They don’t encourage us to come here at this time

That’s what I was gonna ask

But we decided by ourselves to come here

To enjoy our life

Because we want to communicate with different people with different cultures

So that’s why we are here

Look at it! The beach it’s beautiful

You must be feeling good now, right?

Winter in China?

Yes, it’s very cold

This is just an example but

Wearing a mask you know

I film like this

And I get lots of comments from people like

“In Australia don’t you guys wear a mask?”

I think in Japan everyone wears it, hey? Even on the street

I reckon in China too

I think some people wear a mask not because they don’t wanna get sick

Because they don’t wanna look fool. They don’t wanna be judged by people like

“What are you doing?! Like “Why are you not wearing a mask?”

You know in Asian countries I think other people kind of like. They have the eyes

Do you think China is similar to Japan like this?

Yes, you are right

Most people care about what other people think

I think wearing a mask

Actually in China it’s becoming less important right now

There are not so many people getting COVID

Many people don’t wear a mask right now

It’s a little bit different from Japan, hey

Coz in Japan even the case number was low you had to..

It sounds like you had to be wearing a mask

Otherwise like “These people are not wearing a mask..” Or something

Do you know peer pressure?

Peer pressure is like You kind of feel like

You have to agree with what the majority of people think

You get the peer pressure you feel like

You are not a part of a group

Do you think in China people care about this?

What do you think about yourself?

Yeah, I think so

Because now we are students so our friends around us. Most of them are students too so

Many Chinese students they like to be together

And they like to decide something together

They like to follow others

That’s the fact

Similar to Japan,hey

Thank you very much guys. Thank you for your time

And I hope you’ll enjoy the time in Australia from today

You made a right decision I think

And can I just say

Fantastic English!

Good job to you guys

First day in Australia

You are having a fantastic conversation with people so

Good on you guys and enjoy Australia

3組目 シドニー、アリススプリングス出身の2人に聞いてみた!

Where are you from?

I’m from Sydney

Alice Springs which is the center of Australia

Today in this video we’ve been asking people about pressure from people around you

So diving into the main topic of today

We are talking about as you said external pressures

Thinking about what other people think about you

Basically what the question is

Would you say you are someone who dose worry about what other people think about you? Or

Would you say you are more carefree?

Probably more carefree

I think it’s important to know that you have a good image though

If they are close to you and they know you well. Then it’s a problem because

Well they know you well and it’s probably bad but

If they don’t know you then it doesn’t really matter coz

They don’t know who you really are

How about you?

I’m about the same I feel like

I’d like people that know me to have a good opinion me

Bet other than that if you don’t know me then

I don’t care

You don’t have to care actually

That’s how I think

I’m never gonna know either

So especially in Japan nowadays because of the pandemic. Most of people wear a mask

But I reckon especially young people

They wear a mask not because they don’t wanna get sick

Because they don’t wanna look fool. They don’t wanna be judged by people like

“Why are you not wearing a mask?”

This is just an example but

You guys are not wearing a mask today

Have you ever felt like this about wearing a mask?

I think if you don’t wear a mask

Then there is an external expectation that…

Have you felt the pressure?

Yeah, if people around you aren’t then there is not much pressure

But if it’s just me, I definitely would put it on

Okay, interesting

I feel like I’d always wear my mask. I think if that’s what the rule is

But I guess even if it’s not and everybody else around you is wearing it

You’re more likely to put it on

Coz you have it with you now. You most likely to have a mask with you

So like you choosing not to put it on

There’s a bit of social pressure

So you care a bit of social pressure

In my image Australian people are very carefree

I literally thought you guys will be like “I don’t care what other people think”

“I do whatever I wanna do as long as it’s legal” or something

But you actually care a bit

Would you say you are always like that? Or it kind od you built up that over time?

Maybe with the pandemic it has changed a little bit

Because it is more important but

I agree I think Australians are quite carefree

Alice spring especially it seems especially laid-back

But it’s interesting because

You look at a baby or something or A little kid they don’t give. They don’t care at all what other people think but

As we are growing to adult

We start to actually feel more pressure so

Hundred percent

I think it’s a good quality of life though because

If you are carefree then you are stress-free almost

That is the point

No issues you know

You can do anything

But there is a line coz you don’t wanna

You don’t wanna be too much

Have to respect sometimes what other people think

Thank you very much guys! That was really good

ルパ先生に聞いてみよう

Alright so we are back in Melbourne city now

I forgot to actually say that I’m in Melbourne today

Came to film with Rupa sensei

I was pretty nervous man. The first time collaboration video so I was pretty nervous but

Hope you had fun

Did you have fun?

I had a lot of fun. That was really good

I actually wanna ask you too

I’m pretty sure that people know about Rupa sensei now

Rupa sensei used to live in Japan

He wants to go back there too

Yeah I’m trying to get back

Because you lived in Japan I wanna ask you some questions

What do you think?

I had a very similar experience you know

So I grew up completely in Australia until I was eighteen and yeah

I grew up in a countryside. People are very carefree

Just out there just living their own life

Not really care about what other people think

And then yeah moving to Japan

That’s definitely one of the first things I noticed

They are much more introverted

We are very different huh?

They are very introverted and like you said

Care a bit more about people are thinking of them

Rather than just living their own life and you know. Not really caring about what other people think so

There are some exceptions. I’ve met some really confident outgoing you know. Don’t care at all

Especially the Osaka no Obachan

He mentioned them in the opening

They are even more confident than us

More than Australians?

But then back in here in Australia

There are still some people that think like that in Australia but

But overall especially out in suburbs things like that

People generally just be a little bit more carefree

Yeah I think so

That’s why I like about Australia actually coz

Being carefree means less stressful

Yeah it doesn’t mean that you don’t care about anything

It just means that you care more about the things that are really important

And things that aren’t important you don’t care

It just happens

Let life happen. Don’t sweat the small stuff

That’s definitely the philosophy that I’ve built up over life

And it really helps me

Thank you Rupa sensei today

Thank you for coming down to Melbourne

As you can see Rupa sensei’s in Rupa sensei’s cloths now

We filmed a video for a Rupa sensei’s channel and actually

I spoke something I never said in my channel so
