Thank you very much for your help ladies

Where are you from?

We are from Colombia

How long have you guys been in Australia now?

I have been here for eight years already

That’s quite long time

And I have been here for five

In this video I want to ask you guys

How you learnt English

Because you speak English very well

Oh thank you

Could you speak English when you came to Australia eight years ago and five years ago?

I could do a little bit

And I improve a lot

How about you?

No, not at all

Only Spanish?

Only Spanish

It was quite difficult

Because I’ve see many Spanish speakers in Australia

I think they are similar to Japanese

They are not really good at speaking English at the beginning, right?

People struggle to keep what we studied in our head

After a couple of days we forget

What do you think was the helpful for you guys to memorize

All the English vocabularies and grammars?

What do you think? What did you do?

Did you study like vocabulary books and stuff?

For me it was more listening to English music and then

Watching a lot of movies as well

And then I kind of catch the words and the pronunciations

And then I kind of relate them with the grammar and what I was learning in school

So then that would make more sense for me

Okay I didn’t expect that

But it makes sense though

I mean you learnt more naturally

How about you? Did you go to like English school?

I went for two years

I started reading a lot

You studied a lot?

Reading

Oh reading a lot

Also taking with English speakers is really helpful

Because when you just speak your language

It’s not gonna help a lot

So you tried not to stay with too many Spanish speakers?

No

I just try to be with more people like me learning

Or English speakers

And music also

You guys to listen to music yeah? To learn English

So like I said you guys are not from English spoken country

And now you can speak English

What was the biggest key to come to this point?

Just go for it

Don’t be afraid

Because I’m not an English speaker I’m afraid of just talking to people? No

Go for jobs in hospitality

It’s very helpful to learn

Did it help?

A lot!

In hospitality and retail

I learnt most of my English there

Because you are interacting with clients and

You learn new vocabularies everyday

Which is very important so

Embrace it like

Kind of don’t be afraid to explore more

We have different nationalities here It’s very easy

No one speaks proper English unless you are native

Everyone is here to learn so it’s very good

What about you?

I’m very shy I’m not like her

She’s not

Yeah I am

But yeah I learnt a lot in hospitality too

So in a restaurant or a bar by working

Cafe

I’m working just with English speakers

I ask them like

Please when I make a mistake

Don’t hesitate to correct me

So you let them know that if you make a mistake Just fix my English

That’s it

Otherwise I’m gonna make the same mistake always

Without knowing

That is a very good thing to do

Last question

You guys have a Spanish accent, right

You guys have a Spanish accent You guys have a bit of Japanese accent

We call it Samurai English

Samurai English sounds sexy, hey?

Do you care about your accent?

Or you don’t care

It’s a beautiful thing to have?

I love it!

Sometimes I care

Sometimes people don’t like it

Sometimes they don’t understand so

But it doesn’t mean that you hesitate to speak, right?

I talk

That’s the key

Thank you very much girls

2組目 イタリア出身の2人組に聞いてみた

Where are you from?

Italy

Italy as well

I actually went to Italy maybe like ten years ago

In Mirano it’s a beautiful place

I like the Italian architectures and stuff

And beautiful ladies as well hey

How long have you guys been in Australia now?

Three years

Four years

In this video I wanna ask you guys about English like

How you learnt English

Because you didn’t speak English in your country, right?

No

When you came to Australia three years ago, four years ago

Could you speak English at the time?

A little bit

A little bit but not as good as now?

No obviously

About me not really

Not really

It’s really difficult at the beginning

I attended English school for four months so

That helped me a lot

But I think I learnt English

Going around, meeting people, going to do grocery

As well for at least

People struggle to memorize all the English vocabularies and the grammars

The basic stuff Even the basic stuffs

Usually after a couple of days, it’s gone

What was helpful for you guys to keep things in your head?

Did you study like vocabulary books or did you study grammar books or

Did you have something else?

Yeah I started watching a lot of movies

Movies or TV series and things like that

And I tried to go out and doing shopping and

Just like trying to understand what people ask me

I’ve spoken to some people and

They are like “I listen to music”

“And I watch like tv series and all that”

I feel sometimes you have a lot of words that you don’t even know

What would you do if that happens?

Do you like a check on internet?

I was always translating with Google translate

Really?

Always

And I was asking to Australian people to correct me

Because they feel shy

But I said no

You are gonna help me like that

I spoke to another person as well

She said exactly the same thing

She was working in a cafe

And she asked Australian people

“If I’m wrong, just correct me”

Of course and then

Next time you are gonna remember it and

You are not gonna do the same mistake

I’m Japanese

I have a bit of Samurai accent We call it Samurai accent

You have an Italian accent a little bit

Many Japanese people are a little bit shy about their accent

They feel like they have to speak like native speakers

Which is not true I think

What do you think about accent?

Are you proud of your Italian accent?

Absolutely

Also all people around me in Australia

Not just Australians but

Argentineans and Brazilians

People from all the countries

They told me that Italian accent is really sexy so

I was gonna say

It’s very sexy you know

I was like “Oh that’s good”

So accent is a sexy thing

It’s good thing to have

Of course it is

So last question is gonna be like this

If your little cousin says

“I wanna be able to speak English like you”

What would you tell him to do?

Travel

Travel and go to school

But just school for me You are gonna learn the basic of English

But you have to live in the place

You have to live because

You have to survive and

You have to use English to survive

Was working helpful?

Yes, of course it is

What did you do?

We work in hospitality

Retail

Great advise ladies! Thank you very much

I love Italy now

We love Japan

3組目 トルコ出身の2人組に聞いてみた!

Where are you from?

Turkey

Turky Istanbul

How long have you guys been in Australia now?

Three years now

You guys speak Turkish in your country right?

Yeah we do

In this video I wanna ask you

How you learnt English

Could you speak English when you came to Australia three years ago?

Yeah pretty much but not into this extent of course

Okay, just a little bit?

Yeah I wasn’t fluent but

I was able to work and speak little bit

How about you?

The same

We had lessons when we were in primary school to high school

But we weren’t fluent

So you started studying English since you were like six years old or something?

Yeah I was six years old when I started learning English

Same as most Japanese people nowadays I reckon so

People struggle to memorize Keep thing we learnt in our head

And usually after a couple of days it’s all gone

What was helpful for you guys to memorize all the English vocabularies and grammars?

I think it’s a practice like

If you are not practicing If you are not speaking

Because like my English was pretty good when I was probably in high school

Then I didn’t speak for probably like six seven years

That’s when I lost it

So I think that’s it

That’s practice like

You keep talking and you just

You’ll be around English speaking people

I think that’s the key for me

So you need to use it what you have

Exactly

And then it’s gonna stay in your head

How about you?

How did you learn like the vocabularies and stuff?

Reading helped me like a lot

And also watching foreign tv series

It helped me a lot

Because like when I was in Turkey

I didn’t have the chance to talk to people

That’s why I was watching tv series to like

Learn the vocabulary It helped me a lot

so not like focusing on like a vocabulary book

Instead if doing that You more tried to learnt naturally from tv series and stuff

People

From people that’s better

That’s better

Last question

If your little cousin says

“I wanna be able to speak English like you”

I wanna learn English

Simply what would you say

What would you tell him to do?

If he’s like six seven years old

I’d definitely say like just read books like have some lessons first

Like grammars and stuff

Just grammars and stuff

But even for like a couple of months

If I can afford it I’d just send him or her to somewhere abroad

So they can practice actually

So you really believe that you need to use it

Yeah I believe that or

It’s just like if you are around a teacher or something You definitely learn the grammar

But when you are not using again I think it’s just

You go back pretty easily

People need to be around foreign people to learn and practice English

That’s they key I guess

It’s really good to know

It sounds like to be able to speak English

Obviously you need to speak

But also to memorize, to keep what you have

You have to speak English

That was really good to know

Thank you guys
