1組目 チリ出身の男女に聞いてみた!

Thank you very much for your help guys

Where are you from?

We are from Chile

How long have you been in Australia now?

Three days

We just got here

Oh really?

Nice to meet you guys

You’ve been in Australia for two days But I can ready tell that you speak English, right?

So in this video I wanna ask you how you learnt English

Do you remember when you started studying English?

In school in Chile is not that good

There’s a few schools that Probably like British schools

You have every class, math, history etc Everything in English

But that was not my case at least

Not mine neither

Not yours too

So you had English class sometimes in a week or something like that?

Yeah I think like three hours a week

It was mostly like watching movies with subtitles and

Hearing the radio like “Lesson one”

Pretty mush like that?

Pretty basic

In school you have a test sometimes every three months or something

Did you do writing, vocabulary and grammar test?

Or did you have like a listening and a speaking exam as well?

Not only like complete the sentence and

Multiple choices

Sometimes we write but a little text like a hundred words

It’s not enough

Not enough to be able to speak English

Is your English teacher usually in your country Chilean or

Native English speakers?

Mostly Chilean I would say

So this is gonna be the main question of this interview

Because you speak Spanish as your first language

I bet at the beginning the you started speaking English

You always hear English and translate it to Spanish in your head

And then maybe create some sentences in your head with Spanish

And change it to English and speak like that

Because you can’t just do pingpong with English only

It’s difficult at the beginning

But now I can tell that if I ask you something

You directly answer to me in English

So we call this English brain

Which means that you don’t translate in your head

How did you get this English brain?

What was the key to establish this English brain?

I think for me it was mostly music

I like to hear like English music from America

Also to sing it so

To sing I think it was the most important key which was pronunciation

At first I wanted to know the lyrics of the song

And then I wanted to know what the lyrics meant so

That’s mostly how I learnt

That’s how you learnt vocabulary of English

That’s surprising

And you?

I played a lot of video games since I was really little

So at the beginning when I was like For example seven or eight years old

I remember that I played a lot of Zelda classic games

I always asked my dad to translate everything to me because

It was so hard to advance in the game

Was it all in English?

Yeah everything was in English

And after that I started to learn eventually

I stopped asking my dad and then I

Made a step forward to like online video games

I was forced to speak with people from all around the world

You were chatting with someone on online?

Yeah exactly

I ended up speaking English somehow

Mostly when I played World of War Craft I would say

It’s really crazy

My mum used to tell me to stop playing video games all the time

But actually it can change your life

It can create a skill for you in your life

That is really interesting

Thank you very much guys

Thank you for your help

Nice to meet you

2組目 モーリシャス出身の女性に聞いてみた!

Where are you from?

I’m from Mauritius

In Mauritius do people speak French as their first language?

Yeah everybody speaks French

How long have you been in Australia now?

I arrived in Australia at the end of February so like two months

So you speak good English like a native speaker

In this video I wanna ask you How you learnt English

Do you remember when you started studying English in your country?

At the young age at school we had to do English

Like six years old or something?

Yeah I guess so

In Japan I think we are pretty much the same

Some school we start learning English from like thirteen years old

Which is like junior high school

Some school, elementary school Which is like six years old

But somehow Japanese people don’t really speak English

In your education

We always have exams in school

Did you have writing, grammar and vocabulary exams?

Or you have listening and speaking exams as well?

We had everything

Even in just a school exam you had a speaking test as well?

Yeah we did

That’s really good

This is gonna be the main question of this interview

You speak French as your first language Mother language

I speak Japanese as my mother language

As a Japanese perspective when we learn English When we speak English

At the beginning we always listen to English And translate it to Japanese in our head and understand

And we create something that we want to say in Japanese

And translate it to English like that

However if you do this you can’t really have a fluent English conversation

Without this English to English and English to English

We call it “English brain”

And I’m pretty sure you have “English brain”

Because I’m asking you a question in English

You answer to me really quick

Wasn’t it like this when you started studying English? Like you always had to translate in your head?

I don’t know Ijust think in English and

You think in English?

Yeah I think in English and I speak English and it’s fluent

French grammar is different from English right?

Don’t you get confused in your head?

Translate to… I wanna say but whatever in French

And change it to English like that Or you just simply think in English?

I just think in English and like

Sometimes I even lose my words in French because I’m talking in English everyday now so

What the heck

I think our brain structure is a little bit different

This is s mistery

I’m trying to find a solution

But I still haven’t been able to find

Thank you very much

3組目 アルゼンチン出身の男女に聞いてみた!

Where are you from?

We are from Argentina

How long have you guys been in Australia now?

Almost three years

Three years as well

Two years and a half

You speak Spanish as your first language right?

Now you can speak English very fluently

In this video I wanna ask you how you learnt English

Do you know usually when you guys start studying English in Argentina?

Five years old

Five years old? Quite early yeah?

In Japanese school as well we always have test

Do you do writing, grammar and vocabulary test? Or

Do you have speaking and listening test as well?

Speaking, writing, listening

This is gonna be the main question of this interview

When we start studying second language

You always have to translate English to your language Spanish in your head

And when you want to speak Spanish to English

We always had to do that Didn’t you have to do that?

Yeah every time

But now as I see you guys speak very fluently

You don’t do that much in your head

I think we do it but faster than before

You do that still but faster

I think is that

What makes it faster?

What did you do?

Practice ears

Maybe watching like movies in English

As well as subtitles in English

Yeah and work in here Speaking with Australian people

Could you speak like this when you came to Australia three years ago?

For me no way

So it’s all about experience yeah?

It’s all about getting used to it

Muchas gracias guys

4組目 ブラジル出身の男性に聞いてみた!

Where are you from?

I’m from Brazil

How long have you been in Australia now?

A month and half

Like six or seven weeks

That’s it?

You are a Brazilian person You speak Portuguese as your first language right?

Yeah

Did you use English in your country?

We don’t use English in Brazil

Because of this I had to come to Australia to study because

It’s important in my profession

What do you do?

Electrical engineer

I think you are the perfect person for this question

Because I wanted to ask you about English

How you learnt English

Like you said in Brazil You speak Portuguese as your first language

And now like you said you’ve been in Australia for like a month and half That’s it

You can speak English

This is a big mystery

From Japanese perspective that is almost impossible

Do you remember when you started studying English?

I don’t remember because

I studied English in my elementary school In my high school and in my uni

But I never studied so much

Only the basic maybe the intermedium

Oh man the mystery is getting even bigger now

In Japanese school we always have English exams

Do you do like speaking test and listening test?

Or just writing?

Writing and reading

I speak Japanese as my first language

So when I started studying English

We always listen English and translate it to Japanese in our head and understand

And when we want to say something We create sentence with Japanese

And translate it to English and we speak out loud

But it takes long time

So you can’t have a smooth conversation if you do this

But I can tell you have an English brain we call it

So you listen what I’m saying in English

And you straightaway understand in English

And you can say the sentence in English

You don’t translate it to Portuguese right?

I do the same thing

I hear English and I translate it in my head

So I have to think in Portuguese and translate again

But I know I have to change this

If you say you do this Your process is really fast

For me it’s fast enough to be able to ceate a smooth conversation

Do you have any tips to have a faster process?

How do you improve your speaking skill?

Don’t be afraid that you make a mistake

Only try to speak

If other people don’t understand you It’s okay

Just don’t be afraid

How can I say thank you in Portuguese?

Mucho obligato

Mucho obligato but still a big mystery’s there

I don’t know how you can speak English that good

When you stay in Australia for like a month and half

Good job mate

Thank you very much
