In Australia, do you guys have, some, certain season for job hunting like in Japan? Or people literally start whenever they want to?

Well it’s a bit of a mixture, but usually around February. That’s when a lot of companies release their job advertisements.

They spend about four months in that whole process. But also, it’s so different now across different companies. So my experience has been, sometimes, I had to play a video game.

A video game?

To test my ability to detect how much risk I’m taking.

What would you wear when you go job hunting? Do you have to wear black suit?

No. So in an interview, you just wanna look professional. If you’re going to a big company, big corporate company, wearing a tie is a bit much. But always dressing up making sure you look good and professional is always a plus.

What about beard and moustache, though?

That’s fine but,

But if you got one like me after a few weeks, that’s not fine.

So what do you think? What industry is currently popular to uni grads? In terms of money and, you know, good benefits and stuff.

Benefits, I would say the government. They give you good superannuation uh, money after retirement. And they give you great Health benefits and everything.

Health benefits, which means?

Private health insurance. In fact many private companies do that to help you with your private insurance.

And this is something that they do in the US as well.

Uh Yeah. But in terms of money, itself,as in the cash you’re paid, the government isn’t. It’s good, it can be good.

It’s stable, right?

But it’s kept off.

Whereas if you go work in a private company.Let’s say at an investment firm,

You’re like the money you can make is not kept off.

It’s all about your performance.

Yeah Yeah

So when things are tied to performance, such as investing then you can make a lot more money. but for things that are more, kind of strict and written out for you,

It’s more salary-based

But in terms of the industries themselves, finance is an interesting one. because it’s still very popular, still very important. Except it’s not finance students getting the jobs anymore, it’s engineering students. And a lot of engineering students, although they might be learning how to build a bridge, don’t actually want to build a bridge. They actually want to do investments.

and the reason they do that is because engineering teaches you a way to think,That finance doesn’t.

So a lot of the banks know this as well and don’t want to hire finance. because they don’t learn as well.

Okay so many times I’ve heard this in Japan. The work is usually very stable. As long as you have work, they’re not gonna really um, fire you. But then I don’t think in Japan, people get as much as Australia. Because Australia is an expensive country as well. But then many people say in a foreign country, the money is good and then as long as your performance is good, they pay you a lot of money. But then, they say Western companies don’t really care about firing people, they do fire you. Because they are really looking for someone, they really want to keep someone who can bring a benefit to your company. Is it true?

Because they are really looking for someone, they really want to keep someone who can bring a benefit to your company. Is it true?

Well, I don’t know out of my own experience

Um but in order to fire someone in Australia, you have to have a pretty good reason.

Usually it could be something about lying about sick leave.

Like lying about being sick to not go to work. And they find out.

Which many people do, I think?

Which I, yeah. Many people do that.

Um and then other things like obviously if you steal money.

Um, anything illegal.

Definitely out. Um for more personal things you can’t hire people like you can’t fire people. Let’s say you and I had an argument, and I was your boss.I can’t fire you.

Okay that’s not the proper reason to suck someone?

Because what you would do if you were an Australian employee, you would take it to the fair work commission and you would go with me.

Ohso you can’t do that directly, you’ve got to take it to Fair work.

Yeah so, if I fire you, which I can do, I can fire anyone as your boss, um you will have to accept it.

But what you can do is go away and go to court and say they can’t fire me like this.

You might get your job back, you might just get a lot of money.

So can I take the problem of the tattoo thing to the Fair work?

In Australia, yeah.

you just got the job or you’re just doing like a part-time in your company?

I’ve been doing it since I moved to Sydney three years ago.

Yeah, probably gonna move into full-time work next year with them.

Oh like you got an offer sort of thing or?

Yeah so for me, I have a really good relationship with my managers and this is something about job hunting as well.

If you have really good friends in a company that you want to work in, or parents, it’s really easy to work there. Um I don’t have that but-

You started working like, as a part-time when you’re uh, well three years ago. And then eventually you gain your skills and stuff and, you know, your last year now in university and they kind of ask you, like, if you want to stay there as a full-time or something like that?

It’s exactly like that. um because when I moved from Canberra to Sydney, I went to an engagement party. I went to that party and I met the CEO of the company that I work for now.

And it was at that party where he offered me the job.

Really?

So you like that job and you stay there obviously.

Yeah, I feel connection is really important in this country. In Japan too but I think this is a bit stronger in Australia.

Yeah I mean I know someone who works at one of the best investment banks.

Um you know their grades, I know I know them. They’re good but they’re not the best.

And they basically skipped the whole employment process and just got it.

Because?

Because of their….dad.

Okay, things happen.

Yeah

Australia is one of the most expensive countries in the world. I want to ask you

this question. So as an Australian person, well you got the job but let’s say, if you’re still looking for a job, what’s the minimum, okay, annual salary,

Yeah Yeah Yeah. Uh well, it depends on the industry but I think the medium, like the median salary for the first year out of uni is something around like sixty to eighty thousand dollar mark?

Sixty to eighty thousand dollars? In Sydney? As a first year?

Oh my god man that’s a lot of money.

Well it’s it’s all up for negotiation um

negotiation

Yeah so at your interview, they’ll sometimes ask you how much would you want. and you could say look, like, they could say to you, “We’re looking to give you seventy thousand dollars a year.” But you say “Well hey I know I’m better than all of these people, therefore I think I really deserve seventy five thousand” and sometimes you reach an agreement and it’s better than the original proposition.

It’s so different, so when in Japan when you do job hunting. Um the job description, or when you go to an information seminar, they already give you. So the first month salary it’s gonna be like two thousand dollars or usually after university. Usually i would say two thousand to two thousand, three or four hundred Australian dollars.

But we can’t say that. Like I, if I say “Hey mate, give me more money.”

“I think I’m really good at sales”

And they’re gonna be like “Yeah okay, I understand. But you’re gonna show me first.”

Yeah Yeah okay what’s interesting because some companies want you to negotiate

Really

Sometimes your interview will go great and then they’ll say they didn’t negotiate their salary so I don’t believe in them as a deal maker.

That’s a skill as well.

That’s a skill set.‘Cause if you’re a salesperson for example. You need to be able to negotiate.

So um, being able to show that in your interviews.

So last time when I asked people in that interview video, I asked like “Hey how much do you expect your future husband um earning?”

“Annually or something like that.” And then like people say oh, a hundred thousand.Or like, a hundred fifty thousand or something like that which is a lot of money, but it’s possible.

Right, okay

But then I get lots of comments on that video saying: “Hey man, Australia’s price is so different.”

“So you can’t say that.” Which is true but also I feel it’s wrong because people say “Australia Coca-Cola you know costs like five bucks.” It doesn’t cost that much.

Nah nah, not Coca-Cola.

So I have to ask you how much are these products?

A can of coke.

Three dollars fifty.

A bag of chips.

How big?

Like that, like my face.

All right, four dollars.

Yeah that’s pretty expensive.

A box of cigarettes?

How many cigarettes? Twenty?

Twenty.

Thirty.

Yeah, because cigarettes are taxed.

A bottle of beer?

Well, I don’t buy bottles of beer. I usually buy packs of it. Seven dollars for just a bottle.

Yeah, I’m drinking sapporo tonight.

Are you?

Japanese beer is nice.

A cheeseburger in Maccas.

Uh, I think a cheeseburger is like two dollars nowadays.

Three dollars.

Gym membership per week?

I’m paying thirty dollars per two weeks.

Two weeks so fifteen per week.

So one not so old but not brand new studio room in Sydney.

Studio, so one person.

Oh maybe three hundred per week

That’s not bad three hundred so it’s gonna be one thousand two hundred per month.

Yeah, But if you get a three hundred studio apartment,

It’s going to be pretty old.

Yeah okay. That’s true, it’s a bit more expensive than Japan.

Finally, I want to ask you one thing. When we do job hunting in Japan, we kind of have to be careful about the companies, which is called “Black Company” in Japan.

So black company basically means that they don’t pay you for, like, overtime work. They don’t let you use annual leave at all. They pretty much make you work so much. And you probably don’t even have two days off in a week.

Maybe your boss can be a bit abusive.

Yeah anything like this, do you have something like this in Australia?

Definitely

I think so, yeah. So it’s all about company culture

And unfortunately, there was a bit of a dip where a lot of companies in Australia were like this. It was all about productivity and how much work you can get done.

But now the world is becoming more progressive and Australia is too. And these things are changing. But a lot of the traditional really old companies such as consulting companies like business consulting.

Yeah

I’ve heard stories where, like, if you’re the first, if you’re in your first year working for a consulting company, you’re working at least twelve hours a day.

Wow, in Australia?

Sometimes sleeping at the office, sometimes ordering UberEats for everyone. And sitting at your desk at ten pm at night working.

Okay that sounds like in Japan, yeah?

Well not all the companies but some companies are like that.

Oh it happens in Australia too

But a lot of the people, because they’re getting paid so much, are okay with it.

Oh they get paid for the overtime.

They don’t get paid for the overtime, like they get paid a salary. They might get a bonus based on their project work.

But usually, consulting especially, they get paid quite a bit, so they’re okay with working a lot of overtime.

So they still have a reason to stay there.

Yeah, but at the cost of, potentially, family.

All right it was um it was really difficult for me to interview this kind of topic to you. Because it’s, it’s a little bit tricky. I think some of the people who’s watching this video are thinking “Uh, what’s happening is Tarosac’s english today?”

Usually, usually it’s a more casual topic and it’s good easy to talk, but right now.

If I was speaking Japanese I would have a lot of trouble.

Do you speak Japanese?

Uh no but I know “Denwa bangou wa?”

“What’s your number?” Right?

Yeah, and then people probably know what sort of personality he has now.

That’s just one thing I know for some weird reason. I don’t know.

“Denwabangouwa” usually when you ask phone number to girls.

Anyway, thank you very much for your help today. Thank you.
